As per an Internet auctioneers sales write-up:
This cannabis bottle complete in it’s original box and pamphlet is indeed a rare find. It's all here unopened and worthy of the cannabis museum this small bottle is only 3 1/4 " tall in the box and comes from. F. HUMPHREYS MD - HUMPHREYS' HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE CO. NEW YORK . AVERAGE CONTENTS 135 PELLETS CANNAB. A - CANTH - MERC. C - SEPIA AMER. HOMEOPATHIC PHAR. The pamphlet has way too much info to list , but is quite interesting. All in great shape ( see photos )
MUSEUM COMMENT
The following is a letter sent to a local historical museum dealing with the subject matter:
To: Governing Board (museums' name withheld)
Subject: Complaint & Technical Correction:
Mr/s. I am with a pro-Medical Cannabis (Medical Marihuana) museum
About two years ago I had the pleasure of visiting your museum (nice place by the way), HOWEVER. I was somewhat taken aback when I saw your exhibit concerning Dr. Humphrey and the “Humphreys’ Homeopathic Medicine Co. “
Sir/Ma’am, I can assure you Dr. Humphrey was (given the medical knowledge of the time) NOT A QUACK, nor did the Humphrey’s Homeopathic Co., manufacturer or ever sell QUACK medicines. They were in fact (again given the medical knowledge at the time) – VERY legitimate.
However, (as my memory recalls) judging by the nature of the “(ah) Nasty Description Note” accompanying the exhibit. There is a good chance that you have mistaken (THE) Dr. Humphrey’s with some other individual of the same name. If so can you please make a correction. AND PLEASE NOTE, this is not a trivial matter of simple semantics. As you can see from our own museums’ name, we are a pro-Medical Cannabis organization and YES the Humphrey’s Homeopathic co., DID indeed make use of Medical Cannabis in their medicines and thus our interest in the matter.
Please, by spreading false information about a legitimate medical cannabis manufacturer, you are in effect taking the position that MEDICAL CANNABIS HAS NO MEDICAL USES (as the narcotics police would have us believe) and something that was ONLY used by quacks, etc. Thus once more we must ask that you correct the exhibit, with more truthful information.
NOTE – If you wish evidence to this effect, please let me know. [We have various photos of their products, one of their medical manuals, and various photos from drugstore displays. In addition, a scan through various medical journals shows NO MENTION of any quackery on their part. ]
On the other hand, if you have any actual proof that “Humphrey’s Homeopathic co.,” made quack medicines, please allow me to view it. I/we will be very interested in such evidence.
